Fungal Forays - Fully Booked

In the style of adventuring Victorian naturalists, we will foray around Heligan’s extraordinary wildlife-rich estate and gardens looking for some of the most mysterious life-forms on the planet, fungi. Along the way we will:

  • Learn basic ID tips to help you identify the main fungi families;
  • Shed light on the fascinating and intricate ecological relationships that fungi have with the rest of the natural world;
  • Hear mind-expanding stories about the role of fungi in myth, magic, and medicine.

It is important to mention that we are not foraging for fungi to eat. Our fungal foray is for ID purposes only.

Along the way, you might see the large bracket fungus, Honey fungus and more woodland wonders.

Intended route:

Our intended route: After meeting near the ticket office, we will meander among the trees down Woodland Walk past the Giant’s Head and Grey Lady. Our journey will continue along the Georgian Ride and into the magical Lost Valley where we will rummage under the old oaks and other veteran trees. We’ll then saunter back through the formal gardens peeking in flower beds to the Heligan Kitchen for well-deserved hot drink and cake.

Owing to the topography and terrain at Heligan, parts of the route are very steep and not easily accessible. If you are unsure whether this foray is suitable for you please contact the team at Heligan.

We ask that participants come dressed appropriately for Cornish weather and wear sturdy footwear. We invite participants to bring eyeglasses or fungi field guides if they have them. However, there is no need to buy anything specifically for this event.

Please note that this event does not include garden admission. Once the event has finished, all guests will be guided back to the Heligan Kitchen.

Those wishing to explore the gardens afterwards will need to purchase general admission tickets or present their annual passes at the ticket office.
