Head of Estate
Location: The Lost Gardens of Heligan, St Austell, Cornwall
Salary: £30,000 PA
Contract: Full time permanent, 40 hours per week with 28 days holiday a year
The Lost Gardens of Heligan is an extraordinary, beautiful and historic Cornish estate, which has become one of Cornwall’s most popular and best-loved destinations, with over 330,000 visitors a year. We are looking to recruit a Head of Estate to help lead the conservation and regeneration of 160 acres of Heligan’s woodland, hedgerows and grassland. You will be working as part of the Gardens & Estate Department, alongside the gardens and farm teams, reporting to the Head of Gardens & Estate.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management and leadership of Heligan’s Estate Team, carrying out practical woodland and estate management, enhancing biodiversity and wildlife habitats and assisting the Farm Team. As well as dealing with issues as they arise, the role will also involve both long- and short-term strategic planning. You will be required to assist in delivering events and engage with visitors to give them the best experience during their visit.
You will have excellent communication skills and a track record of inspiring others with your understanding and enthusiasm for nature and the outdoors. As well as practical skills, there will be some administrative responsibilities and your experience of people management will include operational risk and its assessment. Reasonable computer skills are required for this role.
To be considered for this post it is essential that candidates have relevant qualifications in and experience of:
- Team management
- Woodland and conservation management
- Practical land management
- Ecological principles and UK habitats
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Full driving licence
In addition to the above, candidates will also have practical experience of:
- Tractor driving and using a range of tractor mounted equipment
- Operating chainsaws (over 380mm) and brush cutters
- Path repair
- Fencing and gate hanging
- Basic machinery maintenance
- Hedging
- Livestock handling
The role will require a high level of commitment, enthusiasm and flexibility. Some weekend working is involved.
