21 May: 6:30pm for 7pm Start
On a warm summer's day there can be few more breath-taking sites than a dragonfly. These stunningly beautiful insects capture the very essence of summer as they perform their intricate aerobatics around the gleaming backdrop of rivers & pools.
This illustrated talk on the dragonflies & damselflies of Cornwall by Steve Jones, will explore the diversity of Cornish species, including the 24 resident & 10 migrant species that have joined them in recent times.
It will also include a look at their identification, behaviour & lifecycles as well as their unique morphology and the habitats they occupy.
Steve Jones is a Cornishman from Redruth and has been fascinated by dragonflies since childhood. In 1983 he became one of the first members of the fledgling British Dragonfly Society, and is the County Dragonfly Recorder for Cornwall.
In 2010 Steve's first book Insects of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly was published as part of the Pocket Cornwall series. A keen wildlife photographer, he has been shortlisted 4 times in the macro section of Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition.
Steve is a founder of the Red River Rescuers and has appeared in the BBC4 documentary Cornwall's Red River, as well as shooting some of the wildlife footage for the programme. He is also the voice of the Broad Bodied Chaser dragonfly for Heligan's Voices of the Lost Gardens series.
This talk will be held in the Heligan Kitchen on Wednesday 21st May, with tickets costing £20 per person to include a welcome cocktail.
