Ewe Scanning…Spring Lambs are on their way!
- 31st Jan 2018
Last week on the Home Farm here at Heligan, we welcomed Robin Kendall to visit the farm and scan our flock of pregnant ewes live in front of our visitors in The Barn for the first time ever.
Knowing how many lambs each ewe is carrying is essential in ensuring that the ewes get the right care and feed routine to help their bodies cope with the extra demands of pregnancy.
Heligan is home to 19 Devon & Cornwall Longwools, 2 Herdwicks, 6 KerryHills and 6 Jacobs breeding ewes and as a result of the scanning carried out last week, we are delighted to be able to confirm that 32 of our ewes are definitely pregnant! The scans showed us and visitors that we are expecting 15 single lambs, 16 sets of twins and one set of Jacobs triplets! An impressive 50 lambs in total!!
All of our lambs are due within a 6 week lambing period, with the Easter school Holidays right in the middle. From the second week of March The Barn will transform into a maternity ward, to welcome all of the new arrivals, with visitors being able to watch from the side-lines. Once born the lambs will stay in the barn for 48 hours, before going outside to one of the Higher Beef paddocks to stretch their fluffy little legs. We are very much looking forward to sharing lambing season with all of you, plan your visit now so as not to miss this spring highlight in the Heligan calendar.
