Heligan Wildlife - Barn Owls

  • 11th May 2022

This is the first time we’ve had successful laying and incubation of any eggs in the Barn owl Tower since it was built in December 2009.

The tower is a two story purpose built building made of felled Heligan Chestnut that can be left untreated and won’t rot for many years.

The first egg was laid around the 3rd May and the following eggs roughly every two days after.

She is currently incubating 3 eggs

The female will incubate the eggs immediately so that they have asynchronous hatching. This means the eggs will hatch every 2-3 days rather then all at once giving the best chance of survival for the eldest chick.

The first egg is due to hatch around the 3rd June.

The male will bring food for the female over the next 30 days so that she doesn’t have to leave the nest.

If your lucky enough you might catch a glimpse of the eggs as she gets off them to clean herself and turn the eggs!
